On October 29, 2018,  Lion Air Flight JT610 , a Boeing 737 MAX 8, PK-LQP, c/n 43000, plunged into the  Java Sea  13 minutes after takeoff from  Soekarno–Hatta International Airport , (CGK) Jakarta , Indonesia. The flight was a scheduled domestic flight to  Depati Amir Airport Pangkal Pinang , (PGK) Indonesia with 8 crew and 181 passengers. It crashed 15km N of Tanjung Bungin. All 189 people on board died. This was the first fatal aviation crash and first hull loss of a 737 MAX. Indonesia's  National Transportation Safety Committee  released its final report into the crash on October 25, 2019, attributing the crash to the MCAS pushing the aircraft into a  dive  due to data from a faulty angle-of-attack sensor. Following the Lion Air crash, Boeing issued an operational manual guidance, advising airlines on how to address erroneous cockpit readings.

On Sunday March 10, 2019,  Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302 , a Boeing 737 MAX 8, ET-AVJ, c/n 62450 crashed approximately six minutes after takeoff from  Addis Ababa , (ADD) Ethiopia, on a scheduled flight to  Nairobi , (NBO) Kenya, killing all 149 passengers and 8 crew members on board.

The cause of the crash was initially unclear, though the aircraft's vertical speed after takeoff was reported to be unstable. Evidence retrieved on the crash site suggests, that at the time of the crash, the aircraft was configured to dive, similar to Lion Air Flight 610. On April 4, Ethiopian transport minister  Dagmawit Moges  stated that the crew "performed all the procedures repeatedly provided by the manufacturer but was not able to control the aircraft." The similarity of the physical and flight data evidence from the accidents led to the global  737 MAX groundings  beginning on the day of the second accident.

First flight : 30 October 2018 total airframe hours : 1330, cycles : 382, engines : CFMI LEAP-1B. Location : 50km ESE of Addis Ababa +-200m : 8°52’37.04”N 39°15’04.11”E

2 fatal accidents between 2018 and 2019 > 5 service years, approx. 500 737 MAX 8’s built , safety number = (2 accidents / 5 service years / 500 aircraft)*1000 = 0.800. 1 on 250 aircraft had a fatal accident in 5 years of service.

Total 346 people sadly died in the accidents

Worst accident : October 29, 2018,  Lion Air Flight JT610 , 189 dead
